Viçosa

Fabiana Preti’s works consistently establish a structural rigor in their compositions. Deriving from the pieces in the Chorinho series through the unforeseen, Viçosa creates a zone of kinetic friction based on a simple gesture: the insertion of semi-transparent horizontal lines that produce an optical instability and place tension on the pictorial surface, creating a kind of movement akin to long-exposure captures of luminous objects. The incorporation of non-causal factors into her practice intervenes in the rigor and structure of her production—a gesture that allows for full presence.

The layering and interplay of opacities bring appearance and disappearance into dialogue within the internal rhythm and dynamics of the painting. Movement and luminosity in Viçosa unfold in the time of the gaze, which vibrates, oscillates, and glides over the tensions activated within translucency.
