Borboletário
In Borboletário, cores of wool yarn are arranged on mesh surfaces, such as needlepoint canvas or mosquito netting. Fabiana Preti creates chromatic accumulations that function as quasi-units, much like pixels in a digital image—an interpretation that alludes to the title of the series. These cores may refer either to the emulation of the colors of the animals’ wings or to the cocoons of beings in metamorphosis.
The use of the weave as a compositional element highlights the constructive logic of her works, in which the surface can be read as a texture: an interval where tonal groupings form a vertical scale. By relying on manual gesture in the construction of an organic unity, the artist provides a tactile and affective experience that presents itself as a sensitive architecture—the structural organization supports the whole through “separate parts that retain their identities,” as mentioned by Anni Albers in her essay The Pliable Plane; Textiles in Architecture.
