Recortes

In Arte Contemporânea, Anne Cauquelin discusses emptiness as an active resource of meaning within compositions, capable of exerting pressure, generating rhythm, and defining the mass of the forms around it, thereby organizing perception. The series Recortes, by Fabiana Preti, begins from this relationship between figure and ground in the construction of forms that tension fittings, boundaries, expansion, and contraction.

The use of paper patterns in tailoring is based on the principle of subtracting form from fabric; analogously, the paintings in the series cut into the space of the canvas. Within this gesture there is a suggestion of functionality. Preti draws on industrial precision to create intervals in the painting, cutting fields of color from the surface and transforming the support into a cutting plane, in which the pictorial body appears as a geometric shadow. Emptiness thus becomes the ruler that measures the potentiality of color, in turn emphasizing the idea of the painting’s materiality.
